In 1983 N.C. Senior Games began with a vision to create a year-round health promotion and education program for North Carolinians 55 years of age and better.

Today, there are over 60,000 participants in 53 Local Games programs that serve all 100 counties across the state.

Senior Games is a holistic approach to body, mind and spirit staying fit, while enjoying the company of friends, family, spectators, and volunteers.

All Johnston County residents ages 55 and over are eligible to participate. Clayton Parks & Recreation, Benson Parks and Recreation, Smithfield Parks and Recreation, and Selma Parks and Recreation organize and run the games at venues all around the county. Athletic events include basketball, shuffleboard, horseshoes, cycling, bowling, bocce, golf, billiards, croquet, spin casting, swimming, tennis, and track and field.

Arts events include heritage (quilting, knitting, needlework and more), literary (essays, poems, short stories and life experiences), visual (acrylics, drawing, photography and more) and performance (comedy, drama, vocal, dance and instrumental).

Homeowner Repairs

If your home needs major repairs and your income is below 80% of the area median income, you may be able to get help from a local organization through our Single-Family Rehabilitation Loan Pool (SFRLP). We provide funds to local government and nonprofit agencies to facilitate the comprehensive rehabilitation of single-family homes owned and occupied by very low- and low-income homeowners with one or more elderly and/or disabled fulltime household members or with a child under the age of 6 whose health is threatened by the presence of lead-based paint hazards in the dwelling unit.

If you qualify, you could receive funds, in the form of an interest-free, deferred loan, forgiven at $3,000 per year, to pay for the necessary rehabilitation of your home. The local organization providing the loan contracts and supervises the work for you.

If you are a homeowner looking for assistance, contact a local organization that participates in the SFRLP. If you have questions about applying for assistance, please contact Amy Batel at 919-877-5689 oralbatel@nchfa.com.

If you are local government or nonprofit agency interested in applying for SFRLP funding, please contact Mike Handley at 919-877-5627 ormghandley@nchfa.com.

aarp tax help anchor

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide offers free help for older taxpayers and people with limited incomes. Appointments are now required.

The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program is a volunteer-run, free tax-preparation and assistance service offered to low- and middle-income taxpayers with special attention to those age 60 and older. Our volunteers are trained and IRS-certified to understand individual federal-tax issues. Our volunteers provide tax assistance as a public service and cannot guarantee the accuracy of the information provided.

Established in 1968 with four volunteers, the AARP Foundation program has blossomed into a national program with about 35,000 volunteers, each one trained by AARP and certified by the IRS. Last year, the volunteers helped users get refunds totaling $1.2 billion and earned income tax credits totaling $233 million.

The program is one of AARP's largest service activities, with people signing up as future volunteers year-round.
